Guide to Obtaining a Dental License in Kansas
General Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old
- Be of good moral character and professional standing
- Graduate from an accredited dental school
- Pass required examinations
Pathways to Licensure
1. Examination Pathway
- Graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved dental school
- Pass the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Parts I and II or the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE)
- Pass one of the following clinical examinations:
- CRDTS (Central Regional Dental Testing Service)
- ADEX (American Board of Dental Examiners)
- SRTA (Southern Regional Testing Agency)
- WREB (Western Regional Examining Board)
- Pass the Kansas Jurisprudence Examination
2. Licensure by Credentials
- Hold a current, active dental license in another U.S. state or territory
- Have actively practiced dentistry for at least five consecutive years immediately preceding the application
- Have not failed a clinical licensing examination in the past five years
- Provide evidence of completing 60 hours of continuing education in the past two years
- Pass the Kansas Jurisprudence Examination
3. Specialty License
- Hold a general dentistry license in Kansas or another state
- Have completed a CODA-accredited specialty program
- Pass a specialty examination recognized by the Kansas Dental Board
- Pass the Kansas Jurisprudence Examination
Application Process
- Submit a completed application form to the Kansas Dental Board
- Pay the required application and license fees
- Provide official transcripts from your dental school
- Submit examination scores (NBDE/INBDE and clinical exam)
- Provide verification of licensure from other states (if applicable)
- Submit proof of current CPR certification
- Complete a criminal background check
Renewal and Continuing Education
- Renew license annually by December 1
- Complete 60 hours of continuing education every two years, including:
- 2 hours on infection control
- 1 hour on ethics
Additional Information
- Foreign-trained dentists must have their credentials evaluated by an approved agency and complete at least two years in a CODA-accredited program
- Temporary licenses may be available for specific circumstances (e.g., charitable events, teaching)
