Guide to Obtaining a Dental License in Oklahoma

Oklahoma offers five pathways to dental licensure, accommodating new graduates, experienced out-of-state clinicians, academic faculty, recognized specialists, and dentists with a short-term need to practice in the state. A few Oklahoma-specific requirements are worth flagging early: a one-time child abuse identification and reporting course applies to all licensees, the credentials pathway carries a substantial continuing education prerequisite, and the temporary license is limited to just 14 days of practice per year. Here’s a full breakdown of what each pathway requires.

General Requirements

All applicants, regardless of pathway, must meet the following baseline criteria:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be of good moral character
  • Hold a degree from a CODA-accredited dental school
  • Pass the NBDE Parts I & II, or the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE)
  • Pass a clinical examination accepted by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry
  • Hold a current CPR certification

The Five Pathways

1. Initial Licensure by Examination

The standard route for new dental graduates, Oklahoma accepts four regional clinical examinations, giving candidates solid flexibility in which board they sit for.

Requirements:

  • Completion of all general requirements listed above
  • Passing score on one of the following clinical examinations accepted by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry: WREB, CRDTS, SRTA, or CDCA-WREB-CITA
  • Passing score on the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination

Steps to licensure: Complete the application form from the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry and submit it along with the required fee. Provide official transcripts from your dental school, NBDE/INBDE scores, clinical examination results, proof of current CPR certification, and any required letters of recommendation. Pass the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination and complete a criminal background check.

2. Licensure by Credentials

Oklahoma’s credentials pathway is available to experienced out-of-state dentists who have been in active clinical practice, but it carries a substantial continuing education requirement that must be satisfied before you apply. Sixty hours within the three years preceding your application is a high threshold — confirm your CE hours are current well in advance of submitting your materials.

Requirements:

  • A current, active dental license in good standing in another U.S. state
  • At least five years of active clinical practice immediately preceding your application
  • At least 60 hours of continuing education completed in the three years prior to application
  • Passing score on the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination

Steps to licensure: Submit a completed application along with the required fee. Provide verification of licensure from all states where you hold or have held a dental license, documentation of your active practice history, and certificates of CE completion. Pass the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination and complete a criminal background check.

3. Faculty Permit

Oklahoma’s faculty permit is available to dentists holding a full-time faculty appointment at an Oklahoma dental school. The permit is institution-specific — it authorizes practice only in connection with teaching duties at the designated school and does not grant broader clinical practice rights.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from a CODA-accredited dental school
  • A full-time faculty appointment at an Oklahoma dental school
  • Passing score on the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination

Steps to licensure: Submit a completed application along with the required fee and documentation of your full-time faculty appointment. Pass the Oklahoma Jurisprudence Examination and complete a criminal background check.

4. Specialty License

Oklahoma offers a dedicated specialty license for dentists who have completed advanced postdoctoral training in a recognized dental specialty. This pathway builds on the general licensure requirements and adds specialty-specific credentialing on top.

Requirements:

  • Satisfaction of all requirements for general dentistry licensure in Oklahoma
  • Completion of a CODA-accredited specialty training program
  • Passing score on the applicable specialty board examination

Steps to licensure: Submit a completed application along with all documentation required for general licensure, proof of specialty program completion, and your specialty board examination scores. Pay the required application and licensing fees and complete a criminal background check.

5. Temporary License

Oklahoma’s temporary license is a tightly scoped option for out-of-state dentists who need to practice in the state for a limited period. At a maximum of 14 days per year, this is one of the more restrictive temporary licenses in the country — it is not designed for ongoing or extended practice and requires sponsorship from an Oklahoma-licensed dentist or dental organization before an application can proceed.

Requirements:

  • A current, valid dental license in good standing in another U.S. state
  • Sponsorship from an Oklahoma-licensed dentist or dental organization
  • Practice limited to a maximum of 14 days per calendar year

Steps to licensure: Submit a completed application along with the required fee, verification of your current out-of-state licensure, and documentation of your sponsoring dentist or organization. Ensure your sponsorship is arranged before submitting, as it is a prerequisite for the application.

Maintaining Your License

Oklahoma dental licenses must be renewed annually by December 31st. Over each three-year period, dentists must complete 60 hours of continuing education, with the following mandatory topic requirements:

  • 1 hour on opioid and scheduled drug prescribing
  • 1 hour on infection control

All licensees must also maintain a current CPR certification throughout their time in practice in the state.

Two additional compliance requirements apply to all Oklahoma dental licensees:

  • A child abuse and neglect identification and reporting course — a one-time requirement that must be completed as part of the licensure process and does not need to be repeated at renewal.
  • Dentists who provide sedation services must comply with the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry’s sedation rules. If your practice involves any level of sedation, familiarize yourself with these requirements before offering those services.

For the most current requirements, fee schedules, and application materials, visit the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry website or contact their office directly. Requirements are subject to change, and confirming the latest details before you apply is always the right first step.
